If there’s one place where I’d actively tell you not to book a standard hotel, it’s Cappadocia.

Because when else are you going to get the chance to sleep inside a cave, wake up to hundreds of hot air balloons floating over the valleys and feel like you’ve accidentally wandered onto the set of a fantasy film?

Exactly.

For me, staying in one of the best cave hotels in Cappadocia is part of the experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep. And thankfully, you don’t necessarily need to spend a small fortune to get it.

I’m a sucker for a nice hotel (I mean, who isn’t?), but I also don’t want somewhere to be so luxury that I feel like I won’t want to leave the hotel and miss the adventures to be had. Cappadocia is somewhere you want to get out and explore, so my ideal hotel is somewhere with character, incredible views and a bit of luxury — without feeling overly polished or disconnected from the destination.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Cappadocia, I’ve narrowed my recommendations down to three cave hotels that I’d choose for different types of travellers (but all with in the realm of those seeking a balance of adventure with comfort for their travel) — from a luxury stay with panoramic views to the boutique hotel we actually stayed in, plus a more affordable option that still gives you that quintessential Cappadocia experience.

Why stay in a cave hotel in Cappadocia?

Cappadocia has some truly spectacular landscapes, so personally, I think it would be a shame to visit and then stay in a completely standard hotel room that could be anywhere in the world.

The cave hotels are often built into the area’s natural rock formations, incorporating the original stone and historic features with modern comforts.

And that’s what makes them so good.

You’re still getting the things you actually want from a hotel — comfortable rooms, good breakfasts, helpful staff, beautiful terraces and somewhere nice to relax — but the setting feels completely unique to Cappadocia.

And then there are the rooftops.

If you’ve seen that iconic Cappadocia image of hundreds of hot air balloons floating above the fairy chimneys at sunrise, there’s a good chance it was taken from a hotel rooftop.

So yes, you could get up at some ungodly hour and go on a hot air balloon ride.

Or you could stay in bed a little longer, take your breakfast onto the terrace and watch everyone else’s balloons float past.

The Best Cave Hotels in Cappadocia

I’ve split my recommendations below by the type of stay you’re looking for, because I don’t think there is one single “best” cave hotel.

The best cave hotel in Cappadocia for someone wanting a five-star luxury escape isn’t necessarily the best hotel for a couple looking for a beautiful boutique stay — and you definitely don’t need to spend five-star prices to have an amazing cave hotel experience.

Best Luxury Cave Hotel: Via Regia Hotel Cappadocia

Best for: Luxury travellers, couples, incredible views and anyone who wants to go all out.

If you want to go high-end and don’t want to sacrifice on incredible views, this is the one I’d look at.

Via Regia Hotel Cappadocia 5★ is located in Uçhisar, one of the most spectacular areas of Cappadocia, and the hotel is pretty much designed around those panoramic views.

We’re talking valleys, fairy chimneys and — if you’re there at the right time — hot air balloons drifting across the sky.

The hotel itself beautifully combines modern luxury with the historic and natural elements of Cappadocia. Several parts of the property are integrated into the rocks, including its luxury fine-dining restaurant, which serves traditional local cuisine.

And this is exactly the kind of hotel I think works particularly well in Cappadocia.

It’s luxurious, but it doesn’t feel like you’ve simply dropped a generic five-star hotel into the middle of Turkey. The cave setting and natural rock formations are still very much part of the experience.

More on Uçhisar later, but as the slightly more remote, quieter location option, this hotel is perfect for travellers looking for peace, quiet and luxury rolled into one.

Why I’d choose Via Regia

My verdict: If your priority is luxury + views + that classic Cappadocia experience, Via Regia would be my pick.

Best Boutique Cave Hotel: Luvi Cave Hotel

Best for: Couples, boutique hotel lovers and anyone who wants the full Cappadocia experience without five-star prices.

This is the one we stayed at — and absolutely loved it.

Luvi Cave Hotel is in Göreme, so you’re right in the heart of the action, but the hotel itself feels wonderfully cosy and characterful.

And then there’s the rooftop.

The rooftop has several different sections so more than accommodates for all hotel guests (and is especially spacious if you travel out of season). My favourite part was the snug area with cosy on floor sofa cushions for relaxing and taking in the magical views across Göreme and beyond.

One of my favourite memories from Cappadocia wasn’t actually one of the tours or excursions we’d booked. It was simply grabbing a traditional Turkish breakfast from the buffet each morning, carrying it up to the rooftop terrace and sitting there watching hundreds of balloons drift across the valley.

It is one of those travel moments that is impossible to photograph properly.

You know the ones.

You take approximately 150 photos, look at them later and think, “Yep… doesn’t quite capture it.”

You simply have to experience it.

And this is exactly why I recommend staying in a cave hotel rather than just picking a standard hotel chain because it’s convenient.

The hotel becomes part of your Cappadocia experience.

Luvi had everything we needed, but what really stood out was the staff. They were SO friendly and helpful, and gave us lots of useful local tips throughout our stay.

It’s also the kind of place where you can have a full day exploring valleys, underground cities and everything else Cappadocia throws at you, then come back and actually enjoy being at your hotel.

My verdict: If you want my personal recommendation, this is it. For me, Luvi hit that sweet spot of character, location, views, comfort and price.

Best Alternative Cave Hotel: Caften Cave Suites

Best for: Couples, boutique travellers and anyone who wants the cave hotel experience without the luxury price tag.

One of the things I love about Cappadocia is that you really don’t need to spend a fortune to stay somewhere genuinely unique.

Caften Cave Suites is a 4-star option in Göreme and is a great alternative if some of the more luxurious cave hotels are stretching the budget.

The big draw here is the double-level rooftop area, which gives you plenty of space to take in the views and, hopefully, watch the balloons drifting over Cappadocia at sunrise.

And this is where I think Cappadocia is particularly good for travellers who want a memorable hotel without necessarily wanting to spend hundreds of pounds a night.

You’re still getting the cave setting, the rooftop experience and that sense that you’re staying somewhere completely different from home — just without automatically going for the most expensive option.

My verdict: If you want character and the cave hotel experience without the hefty price tag, I’d definitely have this one on your shortlist.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia: Göreme vs Uçhisar

If you’re wondering where to stay in Cappadocia, I’d generally look at Göreme or Uçhisar for a first trip.

The three hotels above give you a good idea of the difference.

Göreme

This is where Luvi Cave Hotel and Caften Cave Suites are located.

Göreme is a great choice if you want to be close to restaurants, tours and the main tourist infrastructure, while still having that classic Cappadocia setting.

It’s particularly convenient if you’re visiting for a shorter trip and want to maximise your time exploring.

Uçhisar

Via Regia Hotel Cappadocia is in Uçhisar.

If your priority is views and a slightly more elevated, luxurious experience, Uçhisar is worth considering. You’re surrounded by the dramatic landscapes that make Cappadocia so famous, and it’s a particularly good choice if your hotel itself is going to be an important part of the trip.

There is slightly less ‘going on’, but for many that only adds to the appeal. I very much enjoyed Göreme, but for my next visit, I’ll be looking at Uçhisar for a slightly more relaxed stay. And just because you are ‘further out of the way’, your hotel will be all too happy to arrange a taxi for you to have a nice dinner or explore Göreme town.

For me, there’s no wrong choice here — it really comes down to whether you’re prioritising location and convenience or views and a more luxurious escape.

What should you look for when booking a cave hotel in Cappadocia?

Not all cave hotels are created equal.

And while I’d absolutely recommend staying in one, there are a few things I’d look at before clicking “book”.

1. Check the rooftop

This might sound obvious, but if you’re booking a cave hotel because you want those famous balloon views, check exactly what the rooftop looks like.

A hotel saying it has a rooftop terrace doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have the picture-perfect views with the comfy cushion set up you might be imagining.

Look at recent guest photos if you can and check where the terrace is positioned, how much space it has etc.

2. Check the location

Cappadocia is spread across several towns and valleys, so don’t just search for “Cappadocia” and assume everything is close together.

For a first visit, Göreme is particularly convenient if you want restaurants, tours and attractions nearby.

3. Don’t assume you need to spend a fortune

This is probably my biggest takeaway.

Yes, there are some spectacular luxury cave hotels in Cappadocia.

But there are also some beautiful mid-range and boutique options where you’re still getting the unique cave experience, rooftop views and plenty of character.

You really don’t need to book the most expensive hotel in town to have an incredible stay.

4. Look for the little things

For me, it’s not just about whether a hotel has five stars.

I care about things like:

• Is the rooftop actually somewhere I’d want to sit?
• Is breakfast good?
• Are the staff helpful?
• Does the hotel have character?
• Can I walk to restaurants (or do I mind getting taxis)?
• Does it feel like Cappadocia?
• Will I actually enjoy spending time here after a day of exploring?

Sometimes those things matter far more than whether the bathroom has a marble countertop.

When should you book your Cappadocia cave hotel?

As early as you possibly can.

Especially if you’re visiting between April and October, when Cappadocia is at its busiest.

The best cave hotels in Cappadocia — particularly the ones with rooftop terraces overlooking the balloon flight paths — can sell out months in advance.

And I’d pay particular attention to this if you’re travelling as a couple and want a specific room or hotel rather than simply taking whatever is left.

There’s nothing worse than planning your dream Cappadocia trip, only to discover that the gorgeous cave hotel you’ve been eyeing up is fully booked.

My top tip

If you’re travelling during the popular months, book the accommodation before you start building the rest of your itinerary around it.

You can be flexible about which tour you do on Tuesday versus Wednesday.

You’re much less flexible when your favourite cave hotel is sold out.

So, where should you stay in Cappadocia?

For me, the answer is pretty simple: stay in a cave hotel.

It might sound like one of those slightly cheesy “you have to do it because you’re in Cappadocia” travel recommendations, but in this case I genuinely think it’s worth it.

The hotel isn’t just somewhere to dump your suitcase after a day of exploring.

It’s part of the experience.

Whether that’s waking up early to watch balloons from a rooftop, eating traditional Turkish breakfast surrounded by the Cappadocian landscape or simply returning to a cosy cave room after a day exploring the valleys, it adds something that a standard hotel just can’t replicate.

If you’re looking for full luxury and spectacular views, I’d choose Via Regia Hotel.

If you want the hotel I’d personally recommend based on our stay, Luvi Cave Hotel would be my pick.
